Thymus Extract and the Immune System

Besides important antioxidants and minerals critical for strong immune activity, bovine thymus extract can refresh the thymus gland leading to better immune defense.

The thymus gland is located beneath the breastbone. This heart-shaped patch of lymphatic tissue is where new T-cells mature before being released for proper protection. It is very active during childhood but slowly degenerates with age shrinking by about 3 percent a year from the onset of puberty. By age 65, the ability to generate new T cells, and thus fight off new threats, is almost non-existent, leaving people open to infectious disease and making vaccines less effective.

Thymic regeneration is presently an active area of anti-aging research. Naturopathic doctor and scholar Joseph E. Pizzorno has shown in his research that oral bovine thymus extract induced broad-spectrum immune system enhancement presumably mediated by improved thymus gland activity. Also, it is known that a large part of thymic decline is due to a lack of physical activity. Exercise might not just prevent thymic degeneration but also reverse it .
