Selenium Plus™ is an essential supplement for immune system support. Selenium is an antioxidant that is crucial to a number of bodily functions such as immune defense and the inhibition of lipid (fats) oxidation. Selenium acts synergistically with vitamin E and in this exquisite formula has been blended with kale extract (4:1) and spinach to provide the highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score.

Selenium is an essential trace mineral. Selenium activates an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which may protect the body from cellular degenerations. Yeast-derived forms of selenium have induced "apoptosis" (programmed cell death) in destructive cells. Selenium is essential for healthy immune function. Clinical research has demonstrated that selenium can stimulate the activity of white blood cells, which are the primary components of the immune system. Selenium deficiency is due to the consumption of foods coming from selenium-deficient soils. People with the AIDS virus have been reported to be selenium deficient. Similarly, limited research has reported an association between heart disease and depleted levels of selenium. People who are deficient in selenium have an increased risk of developing certain types of autoimmune disorders.

Vitamin E plays an important role in the maintenance of the immune system. Even a marginal vitamin E deficiency impairs the immune response, while supplementation with higher than recommended dietary levels of vitamin E enhances humoral and cell-mediated immunity. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects cell membranes and other fat-soluble parts of the body, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) the "bad" cholesterol from damage. Only when LDL is damaged does cholesterol appear to lead to heart disease, and vitamin E is an important antioxidant protector of LDL. Several studies, including two double-blind trials, have reported that 400 IU to 800 IU of natural vitamin E per day reduces the risk of heart attacks. Vitamin E also plays some role in the body's ability to process glucose. In addition to its antioxidant functions vitamin E is now known to act through other mechanisms including its direct effect on inflammation, blood cell regulation, connective tissue growth, and genetic control of cell division.

Spinach is one of the most nutritious greens, due to its exceptionally high source of iron and calcium. Spinach is one of the richest sources of lutein, the nutrient that supports good vision and helps prevent macular degeneration and cataracts. Its numerous flavonoid compounds have antioxidant properties. Spinach is an excellent source of vitamin K, carotenes, vitamin C, and folic acid.

Kale benefits the liver and immune system. It contains lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect the eyes from macular degeneration. It is an exceptional source of chlorophyll, beta-carotene, vitamins A and C, and a reasonable source of calcium.
